The non-profit organization Phoenix of New Orleans(PNOLA)  has agreed to partner with evacuteer.org + Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) to provide evacuteers at the Warren Easton High School Neighborhood Pick Up point during Hurricane Season 2009.

“We primarily focus on helping residents rebuilding in the Lower-Mid City neighborhood, but we’ve recognized the importance of evacuteers in mitigating the risk in a neighborhood like ours with high vulnerability to future disasters, Jim Coningsby, PNOLA’s director of programming says.

PNOLA was created by a Tulane Medical student and neighborhood resident named Paul Ikemire directly after Hurricane Katrina. Currently, it has a paid staff of two as well as 11 AmeriCorps members who will be leading evacuteer efforts at Warren Easton, one of the City Assisted Evacuation Plan’s neighborhood pick-up points.

“The idea of empowering neighborhood organizations to be a lead in helping residents get out safely is a wonderful,” Coningsby said. “We are happy to b involved.”
