July 19, 2009–

Yesterday, 20 bilingual New Orleanians went through their Red Cross + evacuteer.org training. Puentes, an evacuteer.org partner group, will recruited and organized the group for the training.  Participants learned how to eat MREs, received disaster psychology training from the Red Cross and had an extensive training on what they will be doing if the City Assisted Evacuation Plan is activated.

Nearly 700 non-english speaking Latinos utilized the CAEP for hurricane Gustav. Puentes’ evacucteers will be stationed at the Union Passenger Terminal as well as one specialty translator at the neighborhood pick-up points most likely to be used by non-english speakers.

Puentes will be providing most Spanish speaking evacuteers, but has recruited Portuguese evacuteers for the growing Brazilian community in New Orleans.

This marks the second time in two days that news crews have come to Evacuteer.org trainings. ABC 26 covered the City Year training on Friday July 16.
