New Orleans, La.
The announcement that HandsOn New Orleans has agreed to volunteer in the case of a mandatory evacuation marks the 12 partner organization to align themselves with evacuteer.org, the organization charged with engaging citizen volunteers within the City Assisted Evacuation Plan (CAEP).
HandsOn New Orleans has agreed to send up to 12 staffers and AmeriCorps members until the H-12 hour hour mark. The H-hour identifies the time at which tropical storm force winds hit the Louisiana coast line.
“The reception that evacuteer.org has received within the non-profit community has been nothing short of astounding,” evacuteer.org director Robert Foga
rty said. “Groups like HandsOn are committed change makers during normal days. Lt. Col. (Jerry) Sneed knows he can count on this group if the CAEP is activated.”
HandsOn members will more than likely be assisting at the one of the 17 neighborhood pick-up points as well as at the Union Passenger. HandsOn also plays a key role in the disaster response process along side Volunteers of America with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness as the official call-taking agencies for volunteer inquiries.
